Evening's Glow

I saw this lamp shimmering in the sunlight and decided to look around the house for other glowing things.

He's huge.

Our plant inventory seems to continue to grow. Maybe we're going for the greenhouse thing.

There's nothing quite like coming from a lineage of artists. Just continual reminders that you will never be as good as they were.

Sun, lace, and glass. A fine combination.

You know, those things scattered around the house, like this tree that we keep in the living room, obviously.
Is it pretty clear when I'm dripping with sarcasm?

Wood lined up in a row in the sun is very nice to look at.

Hah! Yes, those are my feet! I have really been enjoying going barefoot. My feet are showing the results of walking through the woods and tangles. Wonderful experience.

Man! I really like that. It's so homey a perfect and calm.

Have a good one, folks.

Where the Heron Flew

She plodded along on bare feet down the hot gravel road. The air was thick with heat and moisture. She always imagined that feeling as if it was a big, warm, wet hug that completely engulfed the body. It was late summer, but the heat and humidity were both still very strong. But she didn't mind. This is what she had always known.

She continued her way through the stillness. The air was hot , but the sun was hidden by the the overcast sky. Besides a slight breeze that fluttered through the trees, the atmosphere was calm and still. A quiet afternoon for a solitary walk.

Suddenly, the calm was broken by a rush of wind, except it wasn't wind; it was the flapping of wings. There, through the trees, right over the winding creek, a huge heron flapped his wings vigorously as he reached for freedom. In wonder, the girl stopped to watch this bird as it finally broke through the trees and soared freely and beautifully into the summer sky. His huge wings soon took him far beyond and out of sight. But that glorious moment stayed with her.

She had seen him before, downstream a little ways. She loved to see such a large bird soaring into the sky, unhindered and free. He was a rare sighting, which made him more special. There was something magnificent about the Great Blue Heron, often seen alone, yet full of his own touch of grace and strength. Maybe that was why he needed no one. He was strong enough. She knew she could never be strong like that, and as far as gracefulness should go, she had always been a clumsy, wild little thing.

So, she would adore the thing that had both and quietly go on in life without either.

Things I Don't Love About the South

Ice storms.

Currently, it is raining, but when the rain hits the trees, it turns into ice. If it keeps building up long enough, the ice will weigh very heavily on the trees. Limbs break and trees fall...on powerlines. The power goes out. The toilets don't flush. You can't wash your hands. This is why we should have built our well with the option of a hand pump in times of need.

I'm sure it's not that big of a deal, but I don't like it too much. Sometimes trees fall in very unfortunate places and we get trapped. Not super fun.

I guess it's kind of pretty though.

The Messy Desk

You know, Lydia's messy desk has made it on here a number of times, but there is something homey and warm about it on a cold, icy day like today.

Yep, I am still working on this picture of Mom. It is very, very slow. The hair just terrifies me, and I guess I am a perfectionist when it comes to the hair.

Random Little Things

Just trying to remember the little things that are kind of like little gifts that we sometimes forget even exist. Random things though. Wonderfully random and wonderfully delightful.

A little piece of cheer, a periwinkle blossom on a cold day.

The little flower in a little blue jar with some little rosemary on the windowsill.

The beginnings of what will some day be a wonderful blanket.

Of course, we can't forget the very messy little desk with two phones on it. Oh, yeah.

The little tea mug with tea. I think I drank 4 or 5 cups of tea that day. Hard to keep up, you know?

And little braids tied up into a terribly messy knot in golden evening sunshine.

So many colors bring so much brightness and cheer.

Yep, there you have a few little things that are quite nice.
