Nineveh
vs. United States
If you are a Christian and you
have read much of the Bible, you have more than likely heard of the
sinful city of Nineveh. It was an Assyrian city and Assyria itself
was known for is cruelty and wickedness. Have you ever considered the
modern day Nineveh? Yes, the United States: a “bloody city[country]
,... full of lies and robbery” (Nahum 3:1). I have not given the
idea much thought, if any, till recently when we read Nahum 3 during
family worship. I will now attempt to go through 2 parallels between
Nineveh and our country.
The first parallel has to do
with pornography. Verse 4 of Nahum 3 reads, “Because of the
multitude of the whoredoms of the wellfavoured harlot, the mistress
of witchcrafts, that selleth nations through her whoredoms, and
families through her withcrafts.” This verse made me think of the
awful pornography business and addiction in our country, even among
Christians (including pastors). Indeed, it has sold our country, and
more specifically, our families. The harm done because of pornography
and adultery goes so deep into the lives of the spouse and children.
It is not something to take lightly.
The second issue that jumped
out at me comes from verse 10, “Yet was she carried away, she went
into captivity: her young children also were dashed in pieces at the
top of all the streets: and they cast lots for their honourable men,
and all her great men were bound in chains.” The last part of the
verse could refer back to pornography and there are other things that
come to my mind, but I would like to focus on the middle of the
verse. “Her young children also were dashed in pieces at the top of
all the streets.” What a picture of abortion! According to
Abort73.com, an average of 3,315 little, helpless children who aren't
given the choice to live are killed every day in the United States
alone. How has murder become legal with so much acceptance? I could
say a whole lot more about this but I think that I will have to wait
till another time. The point is, abortion is a great sin that many
Americans seem proud of.
Finally, the third parallel I
wish to address comes from verse 12, “All thy strong holds shall be
like fig trees with the firstripe figs: if they be shaken, they shall
even fall into the mouth of the eater.” We are like Nineveh, a
strong city ready to collapse if we continue in our sin.
So is there a remedy for our
sickness? There was for Nineveh. Turn to the Lord and repent as the
people of Nineveh did in Jonah's day. “So the people of Nineveh
believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the
greatest of them even to the least of them” (Jonah 3:5).
